About the Labeling app

Labeling App

Learn about each part of the labeling app:

Fixed Labels

The Commalla app is installed on the Android phone that is sent to you in the participant starter pack. You will use the app to label sounds in a session.

These are the 6 core labels that are permanent on your Commalla app.

Self-talk:  Vocalizations that appear to be associated with being content, happy, or relaxed, and are generally made without other apparent communicative intent. (The individual seems to be making them to him/herself.)

Dysregulation:  Vocalizations that appear to be associated with being irritated, upset, agitated, bored, uncomfortable, overstimulated, or distressed. These vocalizations are often (but not always) made without an apparent specific communicative intent.

Delighted:  Vocalizations that appear to be associated with being excited, very happy, or states of glee.

Frustration:  Vocalizations that  appear to be associated with being frustrated, angry, or protesting.

Request:  Vocalizations that appear to be associated with making a request.

Social:  Vocalizations that appear to be social in nature.

Preset Labels

With Preset labels, you can personalize your Commalla account. In addition to the 6 core labels we have created there are 4 custom presets that allow you to record events that occur frequently.

How to create your custom preset labels:

  1. Click the        on the "Preset 1" label.

  2. Choose the event that you would consider essential.

  3. Repeat for "Preset 2 - 4" labels.

TIP:  The objective of the Presets is to create consistency in data so think about the sounds that you think are important to share with someone else. Once you set them, we encourage you to think of them as permanent.

Focus timer

The timer is an optional feature to help you keep track of how long you have been labeling for, in five-minute increments.

Syncing

At the end of each recording session, it would be good to get into the habit of syncing your data from the Recorder and the Commalla app.  To sync your labels on the Android app, click on the            in the upper right corner.

History

Your history shows all of the timestamped sounds you have labeled.  If you clicked a label by accident and want to delete the mistake then you should immediately go to your history and delete that single label.

Explanation

This is a tool to use sparingly.  When you want to let us know about a distracting event that occurred during your recording session you can make a note of it using the feather button.
